Stephen McMillan

Stephen McMillan was born in Columbus Ohio in 1955. He is married and has three children, two daughters and a son. He has had a studio in Fort Point Boston (the Seaport) since 1988, has exhibited his work frequently over the years as well as attained success with grants from artists foundations.

Stephen has always been fascinated by what can be done with color and surface and has felt this connection mostly through the classic styles of painting. In his work, he hopes to reach a sublime visual level while retaining something deeply personal, reflecting whatever he is feeling at the moment. He wants to explore the area between representation and abstraction: hidden messages, multiple interpretations. The attraction of things disappearing and what is left behind. What we think we saw or heard. How we remember.

The source of his images come from his imagination, photos, film stills, music, drawings, advertising, Art History, travels, life experiences, conversations, graffiti. Stephen likes to write stories and use drawings under the surface of the paint. These secrets can either disappear or sometimes only be seen when the light is right, or never be seen at all.
